Interview with Brighton punk types Bastion
Bastion have never been to Bastion Mews in Hereford which has left me feeling a bti disappointed. However, they do play some damn fine Bouncing Souls/Slapshot influenced old skool hardcore. I had a chat with my old pal Dan Bowden (singer) by email and he's what he had to say. Oh yeah, check their myspace...www.myspace.com/bastionuk

(1) Bastion, why the name? Are you named after Bastion Mews in Hereford? In fact, have you ever been to the Dinosaur Market in Hereford?Bowden: I've never been to the 'Ford Mr Postans... It would appear that Dan Bell was a sneaky fucker and managed to get us named after an X-Men villain - him and Iain love their comics - we were struggling to agree on a name for ages, and dan suggested Bastion - we all agreed it was the lesser of evils after such attempts as 'Matalan Slag' and 'Smartbomb'...<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastion_(comics) It later transpired that he'd gone and sneaked more comic stuff past us, Bastion is a kind of mutant-hating villian who is determined to wipe out all the x-men. I still don't really like our name but we've had it over a year so will probably stick with it forever. (*I'd like to change it to 'Dandandavians' - rhyming with scandanavians - see answer to question 4)

(2) Who are your main influences then? Don't you think you'd sell more records if you looked and sounded like those cunts from Fall Out Boy?Bowden: As I'm the 'singer' I guess I'd have to get more ginger and chubby to get the FOB look...what does Pete Wentz do other than pout? - I'd like to see Bell get involved with hair straighteners definitely. The obvious influences are probably Alkaline Trio, The Buzzcocks, Early Green Day - as Bell and Dave write a lot of our songs and they're really into stuff like that. Vocals-wise I probably look towards bands like Mclusky, The Bronx and Beastie Boys (Aglio el olio era) who shout more than sing, due to lack of any singing ability. We all listen to fair different stuff, so it's difficult to speak on behalf of everyone, but our sound does seem to be moving away from the poppier stuff due to the fact we can't harmonise for shit. Iain seems to more into hardcore/post-rock stuff and seems to be attempting to get the most dirgey fuzzbox noise he can. On a closer to home level, all the bands/promoters/friends who've helped and been nice to us, come to shows, bought cds/t-shirts and said anything nice about us - without these nice people we'd have probably packed it in long ago.

(3) I've seen you live and you're well fackin' lively, how do you go about preparing for gigs proper like? Any particularly favourite gigs you've played and why?Bowden: We used to be statues on stage, but the nerves are finally subsiding! My favourite shows have been SAI Fest in Ireland when we toured with Heroic Doses - was actually a proper stage and we had loads of crazy irish kids with flags invading the stage, as well as a lady who had the appearance of a crack-whore. She did actually offer sexual favours for a free CD - this was rebuffed as: sex with crackwhore - negative 1000 pointsgive cd away for free - negative 10 points= what would Bastion be gaining, aside an STD and loss of dignity?Simple maths. Sorry for my Heroic Doses bumming, but playing their final ever show at the Fighting Cocks in kingston in Feb 2008 was amazing - best atmosphere of any show ever, was rammed and the other bands (Black tax and The Hijacks - best UK ska punk band) were ace - was great to be part of that day.

(4) Who's in Bastion? I notice you have Lee from old boyband 911 on drums, how did that come about? The originators and brains are Dan Bell (Guitar) and Dave Reid/Lee 911 (Drums). Iain Buchanan was chosen for his rugged looks, and me for my IT and administration skills (I'm not joking). Dan and Iain are friends through Underfire Comics a Brighton independent publishing collective thing (insert website link plug here) and The rest of us met at University in Brighton. They've got the talent I just whore us about on the internet and suchlike... We're basically Dan, Dan, Dave and Iain.*

(5) The new songs on your myspace are sounding shithot. Do you plan to bring out a cd soon? Have you had any interest from any DIY labels?Bowden: Thanks G! We recorded those with Dan Goudie in June (he did our last demo/ep Circa 1882 too) - He's a seriously talented chap and we're lucky to be recording with him again in November this year - we should be recording the rest of an album then, and a few tweaks here and there then we should have a 12 to 15 tracks ready for an album. We're hoping to release it through our friends Toby and Jon from Heroic Doses/Earth Dies Screaming/Serf Combat's label 'Home of the Brave Records' (link plug), not sure how that all works yet - but hopefully they'll be able to help us and give us some much needed advice! We're also hoping to do a 7" split with our friends in The Small Mercies who are also frickin' awesome. Dan Bell is being locked in a shed for the summer holidays to write our new songs as we speak.

(6) What's the punk scene like in Brighton these days? Any good local bands we should be looking out for?Bowden: We're probably the wrong band to ask this kind of question, we're not the most sociable, and our fingers are not exactly on the pulse (probably should get out to more shows) But off the top of my head... The Blankheads (london/brighton) - snotty power punk in the lookout styleLos Mendozas (via mexico) - Wrestling based hardcore madnessThe North Pole - Spikey Indie punk - new band from ex/current hot damn/twofold types - seriously goodStrickland - ex random heroes rapid hardcore pop punkOffcuts - ridiculously spazzy hardcore/metal mess, songs about meat? Those Damn Owls - just started up, singalong melodic punk in rancid'y snuff'y vein, loads of potential and jolly nice chaps too.Toby is from brighton so add Earth Dies Screaming (Hendrix meets black flag ?!) and his newest band Serf Combat to that too.Sak-less Jack are also a great skate punk band who don't get the attention they deserve, from just down the coast although not technically Brighton.Lastly, CAUTIONHORSES - dunno if they're really punk - what is? but if you like Mclusky / Hot Snakes kinda stuff - superb band. + for DIY promoters its all about The New Wave of Cut and Paste, This ones for the Crew shows, Nothing to Prove records.

(7) Any of you chaps into football? Does ANYBODY like cricket? I mean, it's shite and the games go on for about 4 weeks.I love football! Dave doesn't mind a kick-about, and Iain and Dan really don't care for it...Beach football is my current fave as I'm all about the overhead kicks on sand. Southend United are my team, although I'm more armchair than hooligan. Cricket? I don't think any of us are big fans no - we're not a particularly sporty band although I do like a game of badminton, and Daves into extreme sports stuff like kite surfing, as well as sitting on his boat eating spinach and shouting 'YARRRRRGH'. Brett Angell over the Angel who plays for Villa any day. Fact.

(8) The Daily Mail told me that EVERYONE in Brighton is ginger beer and that they love spending £16.50 on a pint, is this true?I like ginger beer with whisky and lime on the rocks. Or even Tuaca - tuscan mule action. Great summer tipple my friend. Nobody loves spending that on a point, there's a few pubs in Brighton that are a little more reasonable but as a general rule it's frickin' expensive, though a great place to live. For bars, music, food, and just general niceness it's ace, I think Brighton only stocks the Guardian anyway so I didn't realise the Mail said that...

(9) Have you got any funny stories involving peni please? Erm, in the second year of Uni whilst living with my (still current) girlfriend (nay - fiance), after a night on the lash I sleepwalked and urinated all over her revision notes and text books the night before an exam. Drying piss-ridden statistics books at 4am with a hair dryer is not something I feel the need to repeat. Not sure if that's funny mind, not exactly a 'boys out the barracks' Alan Partridge moment...I also probably shouldn't share, but I 'nicked' myself whilst having a trim once. Ouch, but quite funny looking back on it - I was really frightened it would wither and fall off.

(10) Ever seen a cat's penis?Probably - I must have seen at least 14 cats in my lifetime, aren't they meant to be barbed or something? Dan Bell probably has one pickled in formaldehyde in his living room, he's into weird stuff like that. erm also: www.murdochspace.com/bastionuk

April Tour Conclusion from Bowden

Hello.

So, we've done the tour thing again, here's a summary from my point of view. These opinions and views expressed do not represent the group consensus of Bastion, they are merely ramblings of someone with little better to do at 00:28 on a Saturday night.

Friday 3rd - K Town Rocks
So we set off from the offices of EDF energy in three bridges, and drive to the Fighting cocks to the sweet sounds of Cochise by Audioslave, in fact we only last the opening epic riff before giving into Chris Cornells warbling and put some other music on. I did actually start to log our car stereo choices, before giving up on day 3 and losing the bit of paper, ah well. It's academic.

Anyway, the gig itself, cheers and thanks to Tony Dead Beat (better stop calling him mercies now) and anTony Fink / Dead Beat and Timmy for sorting this out for us, and for Tony for putting us up in his ladpad afterwards. legend. The night was awesome, rambled to Josh on the bar and the lady who does an amazing job with the sound every single time, whose name has just eluded my eroded brain, sorry. Imelda done an amazing job with taking some photos for us (a couple below, more on our myspace page) cheers for that. We played okay I think, yet again Entrapment was played shambolically, but this time we got Jon El Guapo to sing for old times sake, he seemed a little reluctant but I hope it didn't destroy his soul too much! The Dead Beats first ever show was great - lots of people raved about them, Cardinal Fink were ace too reminded me a little of Guided By Voices in places, Colt Seavers were intense, and amazing moustache. Just Panic blew me away again, bastards. lovely bastards. Drank more at Tonys and admired his organised CD collection. SLEEEEEEEEEEEP (and spooned Iain in his sleep apparently, ooops...)

Saturday 4th - Thee Olde Trap

Wetherspoons breakfast, coffee, drive to nottingham. Lots of tunes included the Cut Ups and Future of the Left from memory....

Get to the venue tres early, go and look at the Castle and drink in the olde trap, the oldest pub in the world/england? had a little explore and then went and peered through the windows of that classy establishment Hooters, decide that maybe going inside with all the suited holligans of Nottingham is not the wisest move ever, head back to venue with tail between legs.
The venue at this one was ace, a little dungeon style practice room, BYOB - we did. Lots of booze, drank beer and then much rum, mainly to keep warm - but the effects were lethal. We played pretty okay, watched Just Panic 'rip shit up' again, and also the Human Targets who dedicated their song Temporary to me, as I like it, which was nice. Good lads, cheers Fraser.
It all got a bit hazy after the rum, and I woke in the morning in a bed in Alun Just Panics houseshare - apparently after disapearing to go to the toilet. Thankfully I didn't wet the bed. (2nd night in a row I slept in my clothes hmmmm...) Nothing too shameful though. A great night all in all.
Sunday 5th - Southend-on-Hell
ESSEX! Back to my roots this one, stayed at my folks - so relative luxury, stocked up on food and then headed to the longest pier in the world TM, and more excitingly £1 bowling on the seafront. Was hungover as hell on this day.....this was pretty much the high point for me, Dave won bowling I think....we have photographic evidence which I'll add once Dave uploads (same with other days generally)
The show itself wasn't our greatest moment ever! Not the promoters fault as I hassled him to let us jump on the bill, but all the other bands were much more screamy and hardcore than us, some to me was just noise - but thats because I'm untrendy and old I guess. Anyway, we got told off for feeding back into an amp, and the crowd generally smoked outside whilst we played - probably for the best, but thanks to my good friends Wes, Ian and Sally who make the journey down and all of Wes mates, at least we played to a few people - and we met a nice person in Markovsky who had some nice musical moments, though still a little screamy for my personal tastes. Thanks to the other bands who let us use their gear n that, and I do like the Sunrooms as a venue I must say.
Got depressed and drunk and rambled shit for hours after this show - and couldn't open door and had to wake folks up to let us in - not my greatest moment, but still. A show's a show eh?
Monday 6th - Crack: Moreish, apparently.
Bristol, now Daves hometown for a visit - Jak (suicide bookings) had sorted us out on short notice after we lost another show so thanks loads to him for this. Stayed at daves house - was epic. He had turtles and a remote control helicopter. After the show I made a pizza from scratch and put more chillis on it that really necessary - sorry Steve who was Just Panics mate. A burning ring of fire indeed. We had a BBQ the morning after show, and many beers into the early hours whilst Just Panic showed us some sick stuff on the WWW. SICK it was. *shudder*
The show itself, well - turn out not so good, but given Jak had a week to promote not his fault, and the barman/soundman was a legend. nice chap, and well funny. Killed By Hollywood were grand stuff, Just Panic played 3/4 of their set as well as ever whilst we sang along, and then did some amazing covers impromptu - where is my mind by the Pixies I think was one of them, I forget, and sweet home alabama which prompted the best Killed by Hollywood rap one could ever care to see, wish I'd videoed this. We probably played a fairly tight set, but alas to noone!
Oh yes, and then the smackheads came and caused shit, thus causing police to stop the show and us to get the hell out of there before we were stabbed with needles. Fantastic, Just Panic never got to end their set - sucked. Then more accident/diversions/police pressence added 30 mins to our journey back to Daves. Funny old night, but Jak was a grand chap so thanks for the show dude.
Tuesday 7th - Who doesn't like Brum?
Birmingham now, courtesy of Laughing in the Face Of's Steve Lowry AKA Easy Target. We arrived in the Brum, feeling frankly shattered, very very shattered. The venue didn't seem an obvious place for a punk show to begin with, but by the end of the night had had a great time. Easy Target did his acoustic goodness which I enjoyed muchly to begin, nice chap to book. Duller in Colour followed us, and were slightly more poppy, but also more angular than us - not straight ahead punk, but totally tight and great and what they do - and very nice blokes to boot, Lars in particular, and the guitarist who name escapes me. Good stuff. Just Panic headlined and yet again played all their songs note perfectly, Bastards. I think we were okay, but a little under the weather and lacked a bit of energy at this show, also big cheers to G and his mates who came down and gave their support, I did an inapropriate dedication to Gareth, but he can take that shit like the manbitch he is, so all okay on that front. We slept as much as possible forseeing much booze in swansea, we weren't wrong....
Wednesday 8th - S-Town also rocks.
Swansea! Awesome, got there - minced about for a bit and then bowled. I kick the others asses. Sorry lads, but it's a fact. I felt sorry for the alley girl who had to take our shoes to exchange for bowling shoes as at this stage they were frankly rank.
Rhys Arteries and Trev AKA the Swansea Collective sorted us out this show, so cheers for that dudes. Trev cooked and amazing curry for us, and then got wrecked like a champion, we stayed at Rhys's after a heavy night of Mohito's and Bucket Cocktails.
The show itself - The Groundnuts and Independents kicked everyones' asses again with their great S Town punk rock n roll. Singalong stuff, and they played very very tightly considering their alleged lack of practice. Admired Greg Groundnuts new emo hairstyle which was apparently due to lack of quiff-effort. The punkrock quiz by pugs was pretty fun, though we clearly know shit all about punk, and if it was not for Trev's help would've scored a big fat zero. We played okay I think, a few drum problems from the prima donna that is Dave ;) but we got through a decent enough set in the end and a few people said nice things, which was, nice. Met Nigel and a chap from the Symptons whose name eludes me again (I should write this when not so tired) who were all sound as. Oh, and great to see Ryan of Heroic Doses original member 'Fame' and his new fiance (congrats again)....Basically a top top night.
and I snored Z Z Z Z!
Thursday 9th - The End of an beERA.
After a long drive with some ipod DJing back from Swansea, we arrived back in Brighton late afternoon and popped home for quick showers before heading to the Hobgoblin to set up and greet bands arriving. I was a dead man walking by this stage, truly exhausted and not really looking forward to the prospect of another eve of 'fun'. Especially as I made an amateur promoter error of booking TOO MANY FUCKING BANDS. I really need to know how to say no / be more sensible, a lesson learned one could say. I was a proper snappy stresshead and also kept faffing about with the running order to 3/4 of Bastions dismay, but heyho it all worked out ok in the end.
Those nice chaps AKA Those Damn Owls opened proceedings with their take on 1990's style pop punk, music maybe american in sound, but the vocals give them a great authentically british edge so they don't sound like they're just copying 90's bands like Rancid/Green Day. Grand set with lots of energy, they need to get out Brighton at some point though, the lazy gits ;)
Laughing in the Face Of returned the favour next, really amazing techical skate punk - totally not fashionable, and all the better for it - aside a technical hitch played some amazing stuff. Finally chatted to them a bit more after sharing a couple of bills together in the past - nice blokes.
Just Panic played next - seriously great as ever, and loads of people told me how much they enjoyed them which was really cool to have people agree with our opinion of how good these fellas are (sorry for the arselicking, but people really do need to check them out)
You Me & The Atom Bomb played an earlier set due to transport commitments, they were as good as you'd expect from them - I'm really sorry that due to my logistical clusterfuck they played a shorter set than we'd all have liked. Great band, and v.understanding of my fucking dire time management.
Poison Heart from Belgium up next, a fast and furious set from them - melodic hardcore with a crazilly energetic frontman named Manu. Was pissed off that it wasn't a bigger crowd for them after travelling such a long way. Played a belter of a set and also cut it a bit short so we could manage to squeeze a short set in the end.
We played last as I thought best all the other bands definitely got to play in case we totally ran out of time - we played for about 10/15 minutes in the end and fitted in about 5/6 songs - but I did enjoy this 10/15 mins, and people were really nice and cheery, which was unexpected and really cool. Thanks to all the other bands who stuck around also.
Wasn't a total disaster in the end, which was a cheeky bonus! Thanks to all our mates who stuck around to the very end, and those who tried to cheer me up.
Anyway, that's an overview with epic detail of the tour, a huge thanks to everyone who came and watched us, bought a CD, gave us a show, put us up or offered to, drank with us, to Just Panic and Steve for being totally nice blokes and getting to watch them SLAY each night. Bands that lent us gear and nice sound/venue people, parents and relatives whose houses we abused all generally all that jazz.
More photos will be added to this once Dave has uploaded.
I will never apologise for length or width.

Friday, 3 April 2009

Hellogoodbye.

Tour begins forthwith.

A week of fighting over CD choices in car, stinking feet, hips and elbows digging into the floor at night, warm beer, cold shoulders, waxey build ups, drinking from 11am, getting lost on route, french showers, feeling inadequate compared to 99% of the bands we play with, singing along to the arteries/cutups/dauntless/chillerton CD's Dave has in permanent residency in his car, Dave wearing shitty hats, Dan moaning at Dave for wearing shitty hats, Dan Bell engrossed in comics, Me getting pissed off over nothing, and then the creeping realisation that I'm wrong and a massive cockpiece, bemoaning lack of money, selling 0.3 records a show, smelly smelly feet. Football in laybys/petrol station, seeing the sights, getting looked at funny, meeting nice new people, meeting a few dicks inevitably, videoing the whole sorry affair so we can replay-replay-replay on return to real life.

Maybe I'm hyping it up a bit, we're only off for 6 days after all, but fuck it - if we're going to pretend we're a proper band, we might as well do it properly.

So tonight, if you don't think we're guff: we have all the things I mentioned below - vinyl is on route, DIY t-shirts have been DIYYYYYed, Dave has his 'tour hat', Bowden has a 'MacEnroe' sweatband and fro, Dan and Iain have animal suits.

Can we kick it? Why yes sir! We can.

If you need urgent assistance / contact then email bastionuk (at) gmail (dot) com if you don't have our phone numbers (I'm not publishing that little treat) as dave has an update thingy on that I think.

Come to the shows, hoes.

Gramatically incorrect, nethertheless awesome.

"So, our friends Bastion from Brighton who you should totally check out are playing Swansea next week and it's not all sorted yet and the pretty picture attached probably isn't the proper flyer or anything and it's probably only going to be like £2 or £3 or something and we're playing and someone else might play or maybe not and/or maybe there'll be a punk rock themed quiz with cool and probably not so cool prizes and it's in Coyote Bar which is always a fun night and you can buy cocktails or maybe hang outside for some sneeky street drinking or you could drive as it's mid week and I guess it will all start at about 8.00 pm but whatever. Dd I mention half of Bastion are comic book geeks and half of them are called Dan and half of the Dan's really liked Liberty 37 who are like totally from Swansea and everything but I couldn't scam a free Liberty 37 shirt for him so I feel bad about that but I have an old one he can totally have but he looks like he works out and I don't so it's probably way too big for him? You should so come."

Taken from the Groundnuts & Independent's myspace page. I wish my blogs read as well as that, it's like Jack Kerouac free-flowing consciousness jazz writing or something, love it.

P.S Liberty 37 were AWESOME. it's a fact.
