A Couple More Review and stuff...

Mass Movement Zine: July 2009
Bastion – Consequences CD (Home Of The Brave)

Now, this is phenomenal! Not allowing a second for unnecessary things like breathing, Bastion play a furious and unique brand of hardcore punk that doesn’t let up from the opening drum-roll of ‘Beasts’ to the fade-out of album closer ‘Velocity.’ Every song is an anthem. Closing your eyes and listening closely invokes images of sweaty basement venues, beer flying everywhere, and grown men embracing each other and shouting each word with a gusto usually reserved for heroes. The record is short and sweet, with 14 tracks clocking in at just under half an hour, meaning there are no fillers or weak tracks, just slab after slab of bruising punk rock in the vein of The Nerve Agents, Gallows, or None More Black. If you have grown bored of the almost endless stream of British ‘hardcore’ bands with faux American-slang accents (‘Straight Outta Bromwich?’), then trust me when I say you will not go wrong with Bastion. ‘Consequences’ is a mandatory buy for any hardcore or punk enthusiast.

***Cheers Mass Movement Zine, amazing!***

Black Velvet Magazine: Issue 61: July 2009
Bastion - Consequences CD (Home of the Brave)

At last, a punk rock band with more of a true punk influence, none of that watered down crap. Like many punk albums there us little difference between each track, but when the average length of a song is just over two minutes, few will care. You can forget the stereotyped punk lyrical content, sure there is anger and aggression, but the 'down with modern culture' attitude doesn't dominate this fun and frantic album. 'Deetectives', 'No Sleep 'Til Brighton' and 'Dooooomed' are some of the more enjoyable tracks. 'Velocity' is a grand and epic (as epic as punk can be) end to the album. 'Consequences' won't be a hit with the new legion of Green Day adoring punks, but anyone who has a love for Rancid or Minor Threat will come to adore it.

4/5 Rating (Reviewer: Mark MacQueen)

***Schwing! Cheers BlackVelvet people!***

So more good reviews, but alas what difference does this make - we already know that you won't buy the album you credit crunched mp3 downloading people!

Anyway, we're not doing anything over the summer - and as you probably already know Daves moving abroad in the Autumn and I'm (Bowden) being a treachorus bastard so we won't be playing a lot more shows, just one or two in October - so keep your eyes on the prize and we'll let you know when these final shows occur.

Have a grand summer y'all.

Punktastic Online Zine / Website: July 2009
Bastion – Consequences (Home Of The Brave Records – 2009)

"This song is not going to change the world," Bastion proclaim on 'No Way Jose'. And they're right. It won't. About 12 years ago I would have adored this record. I would have been 17 and just discovering all the good stuff (fast and furious melodic hardcore straight outta the SoCal scene) and I would have lapped this up a treat. It reminds me a bit of Good Riddance, in places the vocal melodies kind of remind me of Agnostic Front, even though sonically they're miles apart. I guess the closest comparable band is maybe You Me And The Atom Bomb. Anyway, this record is choc-full of punk rock anthems, sung with a strong throaty swagger and lots of alcohol-fueled singalongs. It's pop-punk for the punks, not the pop kids.

And for that reason it kind of passes me by a little bit. Many moons ago I would have lived and breathed this record, but I've mellowed out a little bit in my (relative) old age and as a result I find this a little tired and dated. It's still passionate and emotive and for that the band deserve your attention, but I don't think too many people outside the strong DIY circle that will obviously love this record will be converted. Not because it's bad - because it's actually very good - but it's limited in what it does.

"This song is all about being punk, this song is all about being DIY" the band sing*. The whole album is testament to this ethos and for that alone is well worthy of a listen. For me, well my tastes have changed. I know the 17-year-old in me would have given this 10/10 but I can't hack it any more. If you like Chillerton and all of those quality south-coast bands then Bastion are definitely the band for you.

3/5 stars

*actually for the record we don't - it's 'this song is NOT about....." Ah well!

**Well, pretty good too, probably a pretty fair appraisal - Thanks Punktastic People**

Two more album reviews

From Mild Peril Zine, Issue 14 (June 2009)Bastion – Consequences (Home Of The Brave Records – 2009)
As soon as the first ring out of the first song Beasts rings out, I have a slight inkling that I’m gonna like this album, then it kicks off into this fucking intense upbeat melodic punk rock and I think I’m gonna REALLY like this album. The next track Big Yellow, is of a slower tempo, more of a mid-tempo gruffy variety, some fantastic backing vocals really make this sound HUGE! A kinda mixture of Swinging Utters and The Bouncing Souls. The album carries on from that point I’m glad to say, very catchy, sometimes fast, sometimes very fast, never too slow though! I won’t bother picking out my favourite songs, you should buy the album (£5.50 inc P&P) and choose your own! Anyway, these dudes are from Brighton and this is their debut album, apparently they are geeks; ones an electrical engineer, ones a science technician and two are comic book writers. Thank you loads Home Of The Brave for sending this my way, a proper great album which Bastion must be chuffed to fuck to have released, certainly going on my list of UK bands I like.

***Wehay! another good review, Cheers Mild Peril Zine Dudes!***

Issue Punk Zine Number 42: May/June 2009Bastion – Consequences (Home Of The Brave Records – 2009)
BASTION are a bloody fantastic punk band from Brighton, who have gigged extensively, put out a couple of decent demo's and now a knock out album. Delivered for the most part at breath-taking speed it is the perfect blend of old-school, melodic hardcore and even a dash of pop punk to complete the picture. There are a whole stack of fast, catchy, punchy punk tracks on the gem of a CD. All the songs are great, although track 9 (EDIT No Way! Jose!) is my fave and that's down to some of the lyrics. But it's all just so god-damned punky that it doesn't really matter cos they are all winners.

***And another good review, un-fucking-believable!***

Some reviews of 'Consequences'

From 'Lights Go Out' Zine Issue 5 (June 2009)

Bastion - Consequences (Home of the Brave)
Being from up north means that I'm not very up on southern bands so I've
not heard this band before. Bastion are a punk band from Brighton. From
what I gather (that's right Mr T, I do my research!), they've had a
couple of demos and a couple of songs out on compilations but this is
their first full length album. They're one of those bands who play their
songs as fast as physically possible, which could be good or bad really.
These guys seem to pull it off though and the album is packed with fast,
sing-along songs, which wouldn't be out of place in an underground bar
packed with kids who have snuck out from their parents' houses on a
school night just to shout the songs.

***Not Bad! Cheers***

Bastion - Consequences (Home Of The Brave)
Ladies and gentlemen, I think we've found our album of 2009! Seriously
this is that f+cking good, I think you should all go and order your copy
without delay, maybe instead of reading the rest of this review. But for
those of you who haven't taken my advice then I guess I'd better tell
you a little more about Consequences by Bastion. Hailing from Brighton
this 4 piece play a very UK sounding gruff punk rock with some hardcore
and some street values, but with a foot definitely in the rock and roll
camp of punk. The songs are pacey and powerful, the vocals brash and
fast. The backing vocals are excellent too and it event has some great
sing a long opportunities. The power of this album really does hit you
full on smack in the face. It's hard to pick out some tracks of note but
I'll drop a mention to "Trust Me!", "Doooooomed", "One For The Road",
"Detectives" and "I Don't Like Your Face, Pal!" but it is hard from the
14 on offer. Not a duff tune on here. So if you've read the whole thing,
nice one and now get yourself ordering this album, it's gonna be stuck
on my player for quite a while!

***Believe it or not, we didn't suck off the reviewer.***

Reviews from Mild Peril Issue 14, and Issue Punk Zine will be added here as soon as we can be bothered to type them out.

All Systems NO!

Morning,

Well, since tour we've done absolutely bugger all. Barely practiced, no shows, not a huge amount of writing....frankly it's been nice to chill out, only been to a few shows to watch too - Shot Baker / Classics of Love show is the only one that springs to mind, SB were ace and the album is pretty outstanding too, so at least it was worth venturing to the Engine Rooms (toilets now functioning - amazing). Oh, and Kunt & The Gang was pretty funny until his guts went wrong / swine flu / whatever excuse that lanky bastard gave! Actually, he seemed in genuine distress so fair play, and the documentary is fucking brilliant.

But alas all good things come to an end, and this coming Monday (18th May 2009) at the Prince Albert Pub in Brighton we'll be back on stage / floor area screaming our little heads off. We're playing with fellow Brightonians Those Damn Owls and a band only known as The Park who appear not to have a myspace/purevolume or any information about them so far, it might be their first show I think - but I digress, their bassist is rumoured to have been a member of Britpop chart botherers Cornershop back 'in the day'...so I'm expecting some quality poppy indie, and if it's another bunch of scruffy hooligans with spikey hair and tattoos then I'll be disapointed. Details below:

Prince Albert (upstairs), Trafalgor Street, Brighton - just below the train station.
£3/4 door tax.
We're on first at 8.30pm approximately.
The Park are up next, and then the evening concludes with Those Damn Owls....

If you haven't bought an album off us yet then we'll have a few with us - they cost £5 each, are 14 tracks in total, 30 minutes in length, and 100% of awesome. We also still have some 7" Lost London Records splits left from tour too...Obviously, after paying entry and for beers we totally understand if you don't, but we'll secretly resent you and plot your torrid downfall.

Plans: We don't really have any - we're not going out of our way to book shows between May and August, but if anything comes up we're all available for and it isn't too much hassle then we might one. I'm pretty much focusing on getting wedding stuff sorted as I'm getting married to my long term special friend Vicky on 14 August this year, but keep your ears to the ground for the long awaited (by me and 3 or 4 others) birth of Combat Wank, the heirs in waiting to the Beastie Boys throne.

Having said that we'll be back raring to go from September through to Dave's exodus to become a ski/snowboard instructor with his mrs, Gemma, in Austrian in November. So we'll do a few shows in Sep/Oct and probably have a Goodbye/thanks show sometime at the end of October or start of November. Then that's it. At least for 9 or 10 months, possibly permanently, we shall see...Unless I learn the drums and become the new Phil Collins that is...

Murghhhhhhhhhhh*
